Curly hair specialist, Avalon, Lower Hutt
Your curls already know what they're doing
I'm Pepa. I cut, shape and read curly hair at my studio in Avalon, Lower Hutt, and I'll teach you how to look after it once you leave.
Most salons treat curly hair as a problem to solve
You've probably had the appointment where someone brushed it out, cut it straight, and handed you back something that wasn't yours. Or you were told your hair was too thick, too frizzy, too much work.
Curly hair isn't difficult. It's specific. Texture, density, growth pattern and porosity combine differently in every single head of hair, which is why the generic approach never works and why a curl cut is its own craft.
I've spent years learning that craft, and I teach it to other stylists across Aotearoa and Australia.
Here, I do it one person at a time.
Your hair has a signature. My job is to read it.

“Finally, a hairdresser who knows curly hair.”
Every review Curl Native has ever had is five stars. The word that comes up most often isn't styling. It's education.
What a curl appointment looks like
Every appointment is a conversation before it's a haircut. We'll talk about what your hair does, what you want it to do, and what's been getting in the way.
Curl cutting
Precision cutting for all curl types, from loose waves through to tight coils. Cut to work with your growth pattern, not against it.
Styling
Shaping, definition and volume, done in a way you can actually repeat at home.
Curl education
The part most people come back for. How to wash it, when to touch it, what your hair is telling you. You'll leave knowing what to do on a Tuesday morning by yourself.
Products and maintenance
Curl-friendly products through the service and for home, matched to your hair rather than to a shelf.
There's room for all of us here.
How to show up for yourself at your appointment
A few things that make the appointment better, and none of them are about your hair.
Wear something that makes you feel confident
It doesn't have to be full glam. It just has to make you feel good.
Wear the makeup if you love the makeup
Even a little gloss and mascara. This is your day.
Bring your inspo
If you've seen a cut that makes your heart smile, bring it with you.
Bring an open heart
Come ready to learn, to share, and to work on it together.
I can't wait to meet you for your curl come-up.
Kia ora, I'm Pepa
I'm a curly hair artist and the owner of Curl Native Studio in Avalon. I'm also a curl educator, which means alongside seeing clients I teach other stylists how to cut and care for textured hair properly.
That teaching is the reason my appointments run the way they do. I'd rather you left understanding your hair than left dependent on me to manage it.
The studio is one chair, by appointment, and it's yours for the time you're in it.
I'd rather you left understanding your hair than left needing me.
From the chair
Finally, a hairdresser who knows curly hair. Pepa offers excellent service, a true curl expert. I highly recommend visiting Curl Native for those of us with curls.

Pepa is the best. She has reinstated my natural curl after 40 years of wrecking it through thinning and straightening, all while yarning and celebrating each others milestones.
Sin Istar
I walked in apprehensive of not knowing how to care for my hair and I left with beautiful curls and some great tips to replicate the work she did. She is patient, invested in educating you to own your hair care, and a thorough professional.
